In a special feature in its July 2015 issue, Campus Technology honored Georgia State University Library’s CURVE (Collaborative University Research & Visualization Environment) with a Campus Technology Innovators Award in the category of “Education Futurists.” The Innovators Awards are presented annually to highlight visionary projects that use technology to improve teaching, administration, and operations in higher education.
CURVE, the project for which Georgia State was honored, is a state-of-the-art visualization center that supports research and instruction at the university. The focal point of CURVE is the interactWall, a 24-foot-wide LCD video wall system designed and built by Haivision. Powered by a Haivision Alpha video wall processor and controlled with CineNet software, the touch-enabled video wall allows students and faculty to visualize and explore big data interactively. The interactWall also serves as a user-friendly platform for presentations that leverage dynamic visual content.
Since its grand opening in September 2014, CURVE has supported a number of groundbreaking research projects at Georgia State. Many of these projects leverage the interactWall system to explore how visual media can be used to transform communication and learning. In one such project, the 3D Atlanta Project, student researchers synthesized 3D scanning and modeling technology with historical maps and photos to create an interactive 3D map of 1920s Atlanta.
In addition to recognizing CURVE’s technological innovations, Campus Technology praised Georgia State for deploying technology that was user-friendly and accessible to all. The interactiveWall sends “a clear message that the technology is there for everyone to use,” the article observed.
