NYPA’s Mission to Become First End-to-End Digital Utility Gets Help from Haivision

Providing affordable energy to New York’s more than 19 million residents is now easier to monitor thanks to the vision of the state’s leadership and video wall innovations from Haivision.

The New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) new asset health center, located in White Plains, is revolutionizing operations with a comprehensive system to help predict problems in their generation and transmission holdings across New York State. The new center advances the state’s goal to become the first all-digital public power utility in the U.S.

The new Integrated Smart Operations Center, known as the iSOC, will analyze the performance of NYPA’s power generation assets and statewide network of transmission lines to identify problems and issues before they occur in an effort to prevent potential service outages and reduce repair and replacement costs.

Employees at iSOC oversee operations and outputs from NYPA’s 16 power plants and more than 1,400 miles of transmission lines. Data is collected from more than 24,000 sensors. Highlights of the data are then displayed in real time on an 81-foot Haivision video wall running CineNet software.

Haivision systems help utilities and process control centers monitor and manage their operations. By uniting data from multiple sources on an interactive dashboard, Haivision provides a complete, real-time view of operational performance. When an event occurs, CineNet software helps operators quickly access the information they need to make informed decisions.

NYPA is also upgrading the control rooms at the St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project in Massena and the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project in Schoharie County.

The 81-foot Haivision video wall system will allow operators in the control room to easily view and rapidly assess data from all plants.
